Forums for ministry
In our development of the PHPBB forum for www.newhopefellowship.org, I have come to see many potentials for this tool. The following is a reprint of a restricted access post at NHF.
what Forum can do for NHF
We will be promoting the Forum to the entire church soon. So I start to jot down a list of practical applications in addition to those already on the Forum:

Forum as an integrated solution to NHF's communication and data organization:

  1. address directly NHF's feature of a geographically dispersed congregation
  2. reduces the amount of logistics for all aspects of ministry operations
  3. provides one of the best collaborative content management systems

Communications:

  1. email & egroup,
  2. self-service and self-updating church directory
  3. updated directions to people's homes for small group get-togethers

Worship:

  1. sermons and praise mp3 archiving.
  2. sermon discussion: we should put up quotes displayed during the sermon as well, even if only in text format
  3. we will need to impress upon the congregation for this to be a collaborative effort to summarize each sermon.

Meetings:
One of the major turn-offs to officially being in a ministry, at least for me, is the requirement for meetings. I don't have long slots of time available, and meetings will always soak up more than I can provide. It is worse for our family members who are waiting.

The forum will

  1. provide a channel for everyone to be connected and updated to every aspect of the church, and allow them to voice all the opinions that they have. This will reduce the amount of time needed to update every small issue during our meetings, and leave the valueable time together for the important issues. Hence resolving the problem of "Urgent vs Important" during meetings.
  2. do the above using people's small available chunks of time over the week.
  3. provide the time needed for thoughtful and reflective opinions rather than whatever comes to mind during a meeting.

Sharing:

  1. spiritual diaries/testimonies
  2. group prayer request/journal
  3. collaborative online bible-studies/ group commentaries

There are many aspects of a church that the Forum cannot do. So let us use the Forum to facilitate as much of the logistics as we can, and leave the time that we get together to focus on the important things that must be done together.
