While reading Dr Laura Schlessinger's book "The caring and feeding of husbands", it occured to me an interesting strategy for Marriage groups. Instead of just waiting for people to "share", which always becomes
complaints, or to wait for the non-existent "political incorrect view",
a marriage group can really benefit from reading and offering critique
over books such as Dr Laura's, which offer expert opinions and
well-argued cases even when they are not political correct.
In fact, to balance things out, we can allow both sexes to bring forth
their best "representative" book, and both sides can read it without
pointing fingers toward individuals in the group. If anything sounds
hard to swallow, "blame it on Dr Laura". As I read it, I feel
that it is an invaluable gift to many families. Of course, many other
family experts, such as James Dobson, has written far more extensive
treatments, but the challenging and witty reading of Dr Laura is what
made her so prominent. Furthermore, she shares a lot of real life
stories (from her radio show) succinctly, and these illustrations are
far more interesting than theories or principles. Books by Dr Laura: Good points:
Ten commandments: lots of insights, such as idolotry of man worshipping
himself in the name of scientific advancement. Distinction of faith: to
accept responsibility for one's own actions, rather than blaming or
relying on the gods. Stupid things men do (p 8): being "nice"
vs being "real", of sharing your feelings and struggles. Give feedback
and make demands.
Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, and the companion workbook Woman
Power, are probably the most powerful and practical resource for any
Woman Group in churches across the nation. |
