Religion is more private than sex?

Current social norms dictates that religion, sex and finance are private matters that asking personal questions on such matters are taboo. In fact, the recent sexual liberation makes it far more easy to discuss one's sex life than one's deeply held belief. Here are some further thoughts.
People do not discuss finance or religion because these reflect their value as a person: if they get it wrong, people will think badly of them.
Cheap everyday opinions, such as on weather, movies, sports, celebrity, detach the holder from the ideas being dicussed.
Difference in opinion doesn't reflect personal failure. Hence only people who are publically identified with certain beliefs are taken on their territory of discussion: there is no uncertainty or betrayal: people can anticipate what the person's grounds are, and will either enter into discussion or refrain from getting into a dialog.
For the rest of us, our grounds are uncertain, and people avoid entering into potential disasters. Hence they would prefer not talk to us on these topics. In this respect, it is better for us to publically display our faith, and let others feel the sence of certainty when appproaching us, rather than to hide our faith, and make others feel uneasy to discuss faith issues with us. |
